Outdoor Qualifications

If you want to work towards any of the outdoor qualifications, you need to register your details by completing a registration form when you start to work towards one of the Outdoor Qualifications listed below. You need to allow at least 6 months to complete the qualifications (longer for some of the more specialist ones).

A fee will be payable with registration to help cover the costs of administration and mentors expenses for visits to camps etc. The fees will be:
• £10 for any camp / holiday scheme qualification
• £5 for a senior section permit and all other outdoor qualifications

Cheques should be made to The Guide Association and enclosed with the registration form.

Please complete the form below and make three copies – keep one for your records and give or send:
• One to your District Commissioner.
• One to your Division Residential Adviser.

Once registered you will be invited to an outdoor mentor/mentee workshop to meet with a mentor, who will guide you through what you need to do to gain your qualification on a one to one basis, the dates of which are:

Residentials
Camp and Holiday Scheme

The qualifications available in the scheme are:
- Rainbow Overnight Licence
- Brownie Overnight / Holiday /Camp Licence
- Guide Overnight / Holiday / Camp Licence
- Senior Section Overnight / Holiday / Camp Licence

With endorsements for:
- running a large scale event
- taking girls abroad
- running joint events

Who can take this qualification?
- warranted Leaders and Commissioners
- advisers who hold an appointment card

The standards included will enable everyone to work to a consistent level of good practice throughout Girlguiding UK. The scheme also includes useful material for the experienced Leader such as a ‘to-do’ list for planning a residential event.

Senior Section Camp Permit

This can be taken by any Senior Section member to enable her to take away a group of her peers. More information can be found from the May 2000 Hotline and November 2003 Hotline.

 

Guide Camp Permit

This can be taken by any Guide to enable her to take away a group of her peers. The syllabus can be found in the Patrol X-tra file or here in the badge sections on the Girlguiding Website, and a more informative and girl friendly version is available under the Guide section.

 

 

Catering Scheme

Pans on an open fireThe Catering scheme covers all aspects of catering at a residential event from planning, buying supplies, and organising catering procedures, to hygiene and safety arrangements in the kitchen.

Who can take the qualification?
- members aged 18 and over
- non-members of Girlguiding UK who have completed W/R or W/In forms.

Health and First Aid Scheme

The Health and first aid scheme covers all aspects of health and first aid at a residential event, such as briefing participants, using health forms, monitoring hygiene standards, ensuring the well-being of participants and providing appropriate first-aid arrangements.

Who can take the qualification?
- members aged 18 and over
- non-members of Girlguiding UK who have completed W/R or W/In forms

Climbing Scheme

Guide climbing

The qualifications available are:

Level 1
Climbing and abseiling on man-made structures specifically constructed or adopted for the activity.

Level 2
Climbing and abseiling on single-pitch crags and rock outcrops where there are anchor points such as trees, stakes and bolts. The crag should be non-tidal and present no access difficulties. Abseiling from bridges may also be included at Level 2.

Level 3
Single-pitch cliffs that are non-tidal and present no access difficulties. At this level instructors are expected to place protection and construct suitable belays. All instructors must hold the Single Pitch Award (SPA) or higher.

Level 4
This level may include multi-pitch climbing, graded scrambling and general mountaineering. At Level 4 instructors must hold the Mountain Instructor Award (MIA). Instructors are expected to choose sites suitable for the activity taking place.

Who can take the qualifications?
- members aged 18 and over
- non-members of Girlguiding UK who have completed W/R or W/In forms

 

 

Rowing Scheme and Power-cruising Scheme

The qualifications available in this scheme are:Narrowboat

 

Rowing
- Level 1 Basic rowing (solo or as part of a crew)
- Level 2 Instructing (in the same boat as crew/individual)
- Level 3 Managing more than one boat

Power-cruising

Module 1 (Plan for safety and security of self and others afloat) plus additional module(s) depending on the water used and types of craft.

Who can take the qualification?
- Level 1 of the Rowing qualification is open to any Guide, Senior Section member or adult
- To gain Level 2, a member must be at least 16
- Level 3 is for those aged 18 or over
- non-members must have completed W/R or W/In forms

Walking Scheme

The Walking Scheme covers walking on three levels:
- Level 1 – Lowland country
- Level 2 – Open country
- Level 3 – Wild country

It covers aspects such as:
- route planning / navigation
- general and water safety
- group management

Who can take the qualification?
- Senior Section members and Leaders
- assessment for the qualification may not take place until the candidate has reached her 18th birthday
